Samsung wampoteza Apple

Korea’s Samsung Electronics and LG
both increasing market share in the
first quarter of 2013, according to
UK-based researchers Juniper.
Taking Juniper’s research alongside
data from IDC it looks as though
Samsung now has almost double
Apple‘s market share in
smartphones.
Juniper Research estimates a 30%
year over year increase in
smartphone shipments with the
first quarter 2013 total reaching
almost 200 million.
Samsung sales are up from 63
million in Q4 2012 ( Apple
AAPL +2.15% ‘s sales declined over
the same period due to seasonal
factors). The company today
announced record profits buoyed by
continued strength in smartphones.
Revenues rose 17% to 52.9tn won
and operating profit was up 54%.
Net profit for the January-March
quarter grew by 42%. That’s
despite customers waiting on the
new S4. Figures also include a one-
off charge to settle the $600 million
due to Apple from the two
company’s legal dispute.
Researchers at IDC had slightly
different figures for Samsung and
Apple sales.
Juniper Research points out that
“Apple need to innovate, with the
next product release being critical
in maintaining their position as
innovation leaders. Apple will also
need to ensure that they are
attractive to emerging markets to
retain their title as global brand
leaders.”
Is that entirely true? Strategy
Analytics pointed out back in
February that Q4 sales data showed
the iPhone 5 became the most
popular smartphone on the market:
The research also shows that LG
and China’s Huawei both shipped
around 10 million units with
Europe’s Nokia and Canada’s
BlackBerry down at around 6
million. Samsung smartphone
shipments, however, grew 60%
year over year compared to Apple’s
6.6%.
The leading companies remain
Samsung and Apple by quite a
margin. The consensus over the
past few days, since Apple’s
earnings release Tuesday, is that
really new devices will not come to
market before 2014. That leaves the
iPhone 5 to hold the fort until then.
With the Galaxy S4 launching now
it looks like a tense six months for
Apple and its shareholders.

“ “ Apple’s iPhone 5 smartphone
model shipped an estimated 27.4
million units worldwide during the
fourth quarter of 2012,” Strategy
Analytics analyst Neil Shah said.
“The iPhone 5 captured an
impressive 13 percent share of all
smartphones shipped globally and it
has become the world’s best-selling
smartphone model for the first
time ever.”

Hello Haydn,
I feel you should look at the leader
in total sales & total profits in the
smartphone industry. Even though
the percentage of total
smartphones sold are low, Apple
still enjoy 70% of all smartphone
profits. You can have growth in
third world countries in the
number of smartphones, but profit
generated is very low.
Samsung is in the mobile business
for the last 20 years and they sell
100 different electrical & Electonics
Products in 200 Countries.
Apple with just 2 or 3 products has
a annual revenue of more than
$165 billion in just 5 years selling
in fewer Countries then samsung.
Apple if it starts selling
smartphones in all the Carriers like
samsung, the total sales of Apple
would have doubled.
Apple is mostly interested in
maximizing profits in the
smartphone sector instead of
taking share in the low end market
where samsung has specialized in
the last 20 years in the mobile
industry.
When Apple will come with new
products like Apple TV, they will
take a huge share of profits from
the Smart TV Sector as well.

I agree – I bemoan the fact that
they earned all that money and
didn’t now what to do with it.
Taking the competition on more
aggressively could give them much
better longevity.

Why would you “bemoan” Apple
earning “all that money”? As a
shareholder, I think it is completely
awesome. I’ve watched my shares
go from $8 to over $400 in 10
years. If “taking on the competition
more aggressively” means following
the advice of the various
ambulance chasers, er, I mean
“analysts” you cite in this story, I’ll
pass and defer to the leadership
running the company for the past
10 years, thanks very much.

Surely, hdboy, a rant would be a
lot of hot air without data and a
considerable amount of bias. If you
read what I have written you’ll see
I also make the point that in the
iPhone 5 Apple has the world’s
best selling phone as of Q4 2012 ad
this may protect its reputation for
innovation.

it’s looking ominous for companies
like Apple, Nokia and BlackBerry.
But I too find it exciting.

Do articles like this take in to
account that Samsung also makes a
hell of alot more models of
smartphones than Apple does?
Apple has one model, with three
generations available across the
major carriers, albeit there are
multiple memory sizes available.
Samsung has over 30 models across
all carries and generations. It
would stand to reason that they
should have more sales simply due
to the fact that there are more
available.

Chris, you are so on the money
here. When bloggers talk market
share, its clear to me that they
have NO IDEA what they are
talking about. Its just a number
that sounds good. And your data vs
what and where make it clear.
BOGO sales look good on paper but
they make little profit. Plus, Apple
talkes sales units, Samsung talks
shipped, then on sale at surplus
outfits everywhere for less than
cost. The numbers sound good but
make little sense.
Just a thought, Keep up the good
work spreading sense. :-)

So you bemoan Apple earned too
much money and don’t know what
to do with it? Is it why you have to
trash Apple? We call that envy! We
buy Apple products because it
makes the best products, it has the
best and reliable support systems.
Quality comes first not quantity.
Samsung can launch one new cell
phone everyday, it is not going to
matter for consumers who use
Apple products. People I know who
can’t afford a new iPhone bought
Samsung galaxi’s, they end up
trading for a used iPhone, so far
not heard one that decide the
opposite.

I agree that Apple needs to be
aggressive. Apple has come with
new products almost every three
years. You will see a host of new
products starting this fall which
will double total sales in the next 3
years. They need the money to
innovate and to buy companies
strategically.

You guys seem to be pumping them
out pretty quickly today.
Also, life is a little less rosy for
those that bought at $700 because
of all those analysts who couldn’t
wait to raise target estimates when
the stock kept going past their
original target estimates.
Plus all the analysts, contributors,
media who couldn’t wait to say
how great Apple was.
Look in the mirror and all your
‘media’ and wall street friends to
see who is the blame for the stock
drop.

Absolutely… I cannot imagine the
discussion in the boardrooms of all
the other players notably Apple,
Nokia and Blackberry while they
are discussing how to counter the
size, tech prowess and
aggressiveness of Samsung… They
would be living the nightmare of
having awoken the sleeping giant!

you’re trying to confuse the readers

Samsung can easily triple what
Apple is selling in iPhones. It’s a
very aggressive company that
wants to be top dog in the mobile
industry. They know what’s
necessary and will do whatever is
necessary to get there. They have
the means and they should utilize
those means. Apple is run by a
bunch of sleepyheads who don’t
seem to have any aggressive
tendencies and won’t do anything
to protect their market share.
That’s why Apple is going to lose
nearly everything to Android like
they did with Windows. Only this
time Apple could have easily stayed
on top with all that cash but
decided to coast and let even
smaller companies take market
share from them. All Apple wanted
to do was squirrel their cash into
some big useless pile. Apple
shareholders will be totally
screwed as Wall Street gives up on
Apple. It’s really a shame that
there are no Apple executives who
are willing to rise to Samsung’s
challenge.
Apple’s iPhone mobile domination
is history and that’s all there is to
it. Apple just threw it away.
Amazon is at the other extreme.
They keep pouring money back into
their business and continue
expanding. Investors think that’s
the best way to stay dominant.
Apple has enough money to start at
least two other businesses, but they
just don’t seem to care. Apple has
to waste money on a $5 billion
headquarters as if that’s going to
do anything for the company when
their mobile business disappears
over the next couple of years. If
anyone wonders why investors are
leaving and why Apple’s stock has
lost nearly half of its value and the
P/E is in the toilet, it’s because of
Apple’s lax attitude about holding
market share. Leaving a six month
gap in a new iPhone introduction is
like taking a nap in the middle of a
race. In the mobile industry
company fortunes are won or lost
in six months. Apple is going to be
ruined.

Samsung’s name alone means
cheep crap.
Went to a HS sports/game and a
gent had one almost bigger than a
check book he said he liked the
screen but the phone was a pain in
the pocket and wished he had not
purchased it.
Quality and nice styling always win
out.
Samsung remindes me of the
curmmy hand held arcade games
your grandfolks would buy you at
Target/Walmart on sale with every
lousy half ass arcade game loaded
on it and you never picked it up
again because it was cheesey
and you wanted the real deal/
